Franklin High School
English Summer Reading Assignment
The primary purpose of this assignment is to provide students with an educational experience over the summer that they will find enjoyable and engaging while allowing them to continue to grow as readers.
Each FHS student shall read one assigned text, specified by course:
● All English 9: This message is for all of our incoming 9th grade students regarding changes to the summer reading requirement. In order to promote high levels of engagement and interest in reading, incoming freshmen may select a text of their choice to fulfill their summer reading requirement. Facilitated discussions and an opportunity to share their insights and takeaways from their book selection will be an integral part of helping your student get a jump start into English classes at FHS.
The previously assigned text will be implemented during the school year as part of our 9th grade curriculum so if your student has already read the text he/she will be able to apply that reading in the fall.
● All English 10: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
● All English 11: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
● English 12 CP & Hon: The Chosen by Chaim Potok
● English 12 AP: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
At the beginning of the school year, students shall complete an in-class assignment that provides both student accountability for work completion and an opportunity for assessing student reading, literary analysis, and writing skills.
Students are encouraged to purchase their own copies of the text or borrow the book from the library. We also have a number of copies available to be borrowed from the high school.
If you have questions, please contact Dan Hudder, FHS English Department Head, at [email protected].
Happy reading and have a great summer!
